Information about Washington Festivals
There are a number of annual festivals held in America's Capital. Most of these are patriotic in nature and focus on historical figures in the country's past.Here are a few of the best of Washington's festivals:
- Independence Day on 4th July, celebrations commemorating America's independence are naturally spectacular in the nation's capital.
- Famous Birthdays in February, the birthdays of presidents Lincoln and Washington as well as that of celebrated author Fredrick Douglas fall within a few days of one another and are marked by this large festival.
- Cherry Blossom Festival in April, celebrations are held throughout the city, the highlight of which is the Japanese Lantern Lighting Ceremony.
- Capital Jazz Fest in June, a two-day event featuring some of the world's best contemporary jazz artists.
- National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in December marks the official beginning of the holiday season; this is when the president switches on the lights of the national Christmas tree. Advance tickets are required.
