Information about Venice Festivals
A large number of events and festivals are held throughout the year in Venice. These include religious celebrations, cultural festivals and sporting events.Among the highlights are:
- Carnevale, a spectacular street party held in the week leading up to Ash Wednesday, when residents wear colourful costumes and masks.
- The Festa di San Marco on the 25th of April is the feast day of San Marco (Saint Mark), the patron saint of Venice. Men are supposed to give roses to their lovers and there is a regatta for gondoliers.
- The Festa Medioevale del Vino Soave Bianco Soave is held on the 5th of May, featuring medieval-style celebrations with processions, music and theatrical displays.
- The Vogalonga rowing regatta, held each May, attracts more than 3,000 participants who row the 20-mile route.
- The Opera Festival, held from July to September, features opera and other performing arts at the Roman Arena and various Venice churches.
- The Venice International Film Festival (Mostra del Cinema di Venezia) is held in late August and early September each year at the Palazzo del Cinema.
- New Year's Eve. Catholic churches celebrate Mass and many parties and celebrations are held throughout the city.
