The city has some exciting annual events, most of which are deep-rooted in traditional and historical significance, making Pisa an exciting place to visit.Some of the most notable events include:
- The Luminara of Saint Ranieri, held in mid-June, almost seventy-thousand wax candles are set in glasses and then fixed onto white, wooden frames, which are then placed on the exterior of Pisa's most important buildings and bridges, so as to illuminate their outlines.
- The Gioco del Ponte on the last Sunday in June includes a military procession along the Arno River. The event culminates in a two-team battle for the occupancy of Ponte di Mezzo, in a historical trial of strength.
- The Regatta of the Maritime Republics, a summer festival that sees the four Maritime Republics of Amalfi, Genoa, Venice and Pisa participate in this challenging boat race.
- The Regatta of Saint Ranieri in mid-June celebrates the patron saint of Pisa. Four boats representing the four ancient districts of Pisa compete against each other in this boat race.
