Information about Menorca Festivals
There are public holidays in Menorca in every month except February, April, June, July and September. These holidays are usually celebrated with a variety of festivals.Spain played a major role in the formation of the Christian faith more than two thousand years ago and as a result many of the festive activities on the island gravitate around Christian holidays. The most notable of the annual events include:
- The beginning of Lent takes place in late February or early March and includes a parade, street musicians, costumes and fancy dress balls.
- Good Friday parade depicts the crucifixion of Jesus with someone re-enactments of Jesus carrying a life-size cross and wearing a crown of thorns, while Roman soldiers escort the parade with mock spears.
- The victory of Alfonso III over the Muslims is celebrated in the town of Ciutadella every year in mid-January. The street festival depicts the battle and consists of musicians, dancers and people dressed in costumes.
- The Festa de Sant Lorenc is held annually during the second week of August at Alaior and includes a dazzling display of Spanish horsemanship.
