Florence hosts an action-packed events calendar with a multitude of religious, arts and music-based festivals spread liberally throughout the year.Some of the most notable annual events include:
- Viareggio Carnival, lasting for almost three weeks in February, this is one of Italy's biggest carnivals with parades every Sunday.
- Maggio Musicale is one of the city's major arts festivals and lasts from May until early June.
- Festival dei Popoli, held from November to December, this is Tuscany's most important film festival.
- Estate Fiesolana, held mid-June to the end of August, this is a popular event, featuring music, arts, drama, films, dancing and more.
- Calcio Storico, otherwise known as Costumed Football, is a combination of football, rugby and pure aggression. Players dress in period costumes and parade through the city prior to the game, normally held in June.
- Rificolone, early September sees the city's children emerge dressed in their Sunday best and carrying papier-mâché lanterns tied to the ends of sticks. The celebrations are focused around Piazza Santissima Annunziata.
